Pilgrimage without faith: can you do it?

In short: If you walk for non-religious reasons, you receive a separate certificate without religious wording.
We hear this question a lot. The short answer is yes: on the vast majority of routes everyone is welcome.
Why people walk
People have all sorts of motives: distance from everyday life, grief, sport, curiosity. Many wouldn't call themselves religious and still notice that something happens to them along the way. Walking itself can be a kind of practice.
Churches and rituals
You don't have to attend any service, but you are usually welcome. Many places offer a pilgrim blessing in the evening, and some people find it moving even without faith. Respect is all it takes: dress appropriately, be quiet and ask before taking photos.
Where the limits are
Not every place is open to everyone. Mecca is open only to Muslims, and some Hindu temples have restrictions. Find out in advance. Our page on the pilgrimage routes of the world has notes on each route.
The certificate
In Santiago you will be asked about your reasons. If your motivation isn't religious, you receive a separate certificate. There is more on this under Compostela.
