Altmühltal Panorama Trail

In short: 10 to 15 days, depending on your pace. The official documents describe 11 daily stages, the Rother guide 15.
The Altmühltal Panorama Trail is the best-known long-distance trail in the region and has been certified as a Quality Trail by the German Hiking Association since 2006. It runs from Gunzenhausen on the Altmühlsee via Pappenheim, Eichstätt and Beilngries to Kelheim on the Danube.
It is no pilgrimage route in the classic sense. Many people still walk it in that spirit, as it passes through quiet valleys and across plateaus.
The route in brief
| Length | around 200 km |

Along the way
The constant change between river and plateau is typical of this trail. The well-known spots include the limestone rocks near Solnhofen and the castles above the valley. Then there is Eichstätt as the spiritual centre and, at the end, the area around Kelheim with the Benedictine abbey of Weltenburg and its church by the Asam brothers.
Tips for pilgrims
The many climbs and descents are more tiring than the distance suggests. Plan for 15 rather than 20 kilometres a day. The Altmühltal railway runs through the valley and makes it easier to reach and leave single sections. If you are looking for a real pilgrimage route, combine a section with the Ecumenical Pilgrim Way.
