The first day: from Saint-Jean to Roncesvalles

In short: Around 25 kilometres, with a good 1,200 metres of climbing.
The first stage of the Camino Francés is also one of the hardest. Around 25 kilometres take you over the Pyrenees into Spain, with a good 1,200 metres of climbing.
Two routes
The Route Napoléon crosses the mountains and is the more beautiful option. It is closed in winter and dangerous in bad weather. The alternative via Valcarlos runs through the valley and has a shorter climb, but it is less spectacular.
Preparation
Register at the pilgrim office in Saint-Jean, where you will get the weather and the current state of the route. Start early. Take enough water and food, as there are hardly any services on the ridge.
In two days
Many people split the stage at Orisson, after around eight kilometres. That takes the pressure off the first day. Beds there get booked up quickly, though, so reserve early.
The descent
The way down to Roncesvalles is steep and hard on the knees. Take your time and use poles. In the evening there is a pilgrim mass in the monastery and a long dinner.
