A weekend pilgrimage: how to make a short break work

In short: It is enough to get started. You will soon find out whether you enjoy walking, and you can test your gear.
A pilgrimage doesn't need a long holiday. Two or three days are enough to get out and see how it feels.
Finding the right route
Look for a route with a rail connection at both ends, so that you don't have to get back to your car. Around 20 kilometres a day is a good measure. The sections in the Altmühltal, the Elisabethpfad or the Bonifatiusroute are ideal. There are more suggestions in Pilgrimage in Germany.
Packing for two days
A daypack of 15 to 20 litres is enough. Add a rain jacket, a change of shirt, a water bottle, food and a first aid kit. You usually won't need a sleeping bag, as you will be staying in a guesthouse.
Where to stay
Call ahead, especially in villages. Many parishes have pilgrim rooms that aren't listed online. Ask at the parish office.
Walking mindfully
Leave your phone in your bag. In the morning, choose a topic or a question to take with you, or simply walk. Short routes have a stronger effect if you keep silent for a set hour. Afterwards you will know whether you want more.
