Pilgrimage in winter: quiet paths and what to keep in mind

In short: Only some of them. Many private albergues close from November to March. Check current lists and call ahead.

In winter you have the Way of St James almost to yourself. You meet only a few pilgrims in the albergues, and the conversations in the evening often last longer. In return, you have to plan more.

Albergues and services

Many private albergues and bars close between November and March. That means longer sections without coffee, and sometimes a stage destination that falls through. Call the day before, and carry a little more food than you would in summer.

The right route

The Pyrenees stage to Roncesvalles is closed in winter, and the alternative runs through the valley via Valcarlos. There can also be snow on the Camino Primitivo. The southern part of the Vía de la Plata and the Camino Portugués are better suited, although it rains a lot in Galicia in winter.

Short days

In December it doesn't get light in Spain until around eight, and it is dark again by about six. Plan 20 kilometres instead of 25, and reach your destination before dark.

Clothing

Your backpack gets heavier because you have to pack warmer clothes. If you dress in layers, technical underwear, a fleece jacket and a good rain jacket are enough. Add a hat, gloves and a warmer sleeping bag, because not all accommodation is heated. Also pack dry socks for the evening.
