Lough Derg

Cartoon pilgrim beside an Irish lake

In short: Lough Derg: from Pettigo to Station Island. Length: island pilgrimage, no walking route, duration: 3 days. Best time: June to August.

Overview

Pilgrims have been coming to Station Island in Lough Derg, in the north-west of Ireland, since the Middle Ages. The place is known as St Patrick's Purgatory.

The classic pilgrimage lasts three days and is strict: pilgrims go barefoot, fast and pray through one night.

You spend the time on the island, which you reach by boat, so there is no route to walk. You can get the dates directly from the sanctuary.
