Paths to Mont-Saint-Michel

In short: Paths to Mont-Saint-Michel: from Rouen and Chartres, among others to Mont-Saint-Michel. Length: several routes, often 100 to 300 km, duration: a few days to 2 weeks. Best time: Spring to autumn.
Overview
In the Middle Ages, Mont-Saint-Michel was one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Europe. The abbey on the rocky island in the tidal flats is now UNESCO World Heritage.
Several historic routes, the Chemins du Mont-Saint-Michel, lead to the bay from Normandy and from the direction of Paris. They are less consistently marked than the Camino routes, so use an up-to-date map.
Traditionally pilgrims crossed the tidal flats on foot, and you can still do this today. The tides here are extreme, however, and there is quicksand, so only cross the bay with an approved guide.
Crossing the bay
What makes this route special is the last section across the tidal flats, which many people walk from Genêts. Only do this with an approved guide. The tide comes in very fast in this bay, and there are dangerous spots in the sand.
Routes and planning
The Chemins du Mont-Saint-Michel are less continuously organised than the Camino routes. Book accommodation early, as the towns around the bay fill up quickly in summer. There is a charge for the abbey itself, and it's best to buy tickets in advance.
