Vaishno Devi

Cartoon pilgrim climbing a mountain path to a cave temple

In short: Vaishno Devi: from Katra to Vaishno Devi cave shrine. Length: around 13 km from Katra, duration: 1 day. Best time: March to October.

Overview

The shrine of the goddess Vaishno Devi lies in the Trikuta Mountains in Jammu and Kashmir. It is one of India's most visited pilgrimage sites, with millions of people coming every year.

From the town of Katra a paved path climbs for around 13 kilometres. Parts of it are roofed and lit, and many believers walk it at night too. Ponies and electric vehicles are also available.

You have to register to visit the shrine. It gets very crowded on festival days such as Navratri, so it is better to go outside those times. Also check the current advice for the region.
