Pilgrimage to Chimayó

Cartoon pilgrim in the New Mexico desert in front of a small adobe church

In short: Pilgrimage to Chimayó: from Santa Fe, among others to El Santuario de Chimayó. Length: up to 150 km depending on the start, duration: a few days. Best time: Holy Week, especially Good Friday.

Overview

El Santuario de Chimayó is a small adobe church in northern New Mexico, consecrated in 1816. Visitors take holy earth from a hole in the floor of the side chapel, which is said to have healing powers.

In Holy Week tens of thousands walk there, with estimates reaching over 60,000 people. That makes Chimayó the largest pilgrimage in the USA. Many walk along the road from Santa Fe or Albuquerque, and some carry wooden crosses.

The region is high up, and spring nights are cold. You mostly walk beside roads, so high-visibility vests and clothing that stands out make sense.
