Overview

In 1531 the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to an indigenous man named Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill. His cloak with the image of Mary is shown today in the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City.

The basilica is one of the most visited Catholic shrines in the world. Around 12 December millions of pilgrims come, many on foot, by bike or on their knees for the last few metres.

You can get there easily by metro. A moving walkway carries visitors past the image so that the crowds do not stop.
