Hiking boots or trail runners: which is better for a pilgrimage?

In short: Not necessarily. Waterproof shoes are good in the rain, but warm in summer. Breathable shoes dry faster.

Pilgrims used to wear ankle-high leather boots. Today you see more and more running shoes on the Way of St James. Both work, and the choice depends on the route, the season and your feet.

Hiking boots

They give your ankle more support, and the firm sole protects you from stones. That is an advantage with a heavy backpack, in the mountains and in the wet. They weigh more, though, and take longer to break in and to dry. For the Camino Primitivo or St Olav's Way they are the safe choice.

Trail runners

They are lighter, dry faster and are comfortable from day one. You feel every gram on your feet, which is why many people swear by them. They are usually enough for the Camino Francés in summer. Their soles wear out faster, though, and you may need a replacement after around 800 kilometres.

When buying

Try shoes on in the evening, when your feet are larger, and wear your hiking socks. Half a size to a full size larger than your everyday shoes has proved a good choice. Break them in over several weeks before the trip, including with your backpack. This prevents most blisters.

For the evening

A pair of light sandals belongs in your backpack. Your feet need air after a long day, and in many albergues hiking boots stay in the entrance. The full list is on our gear page.
