Pilgrimage training plan: fit for the walk in twelve weeks

By Johannes Huber,

Cartoon pilgrim training under a large dumbbell

In short: For most people, yes. If you haven't been active for a long time, you should start earlier and talk to your doctor first.

Twelve weeks are enough for most people to arrive relaxed. The aim is for your feet and back to get used to daily life on the route. The time you take doesn't matter.

Weeks 1 to 4: the basics

Walk briskly three times a week for 45 to 60 minutes, and once at the weekend for up to ten kilometres. Already wear the shoes you want to take on the route.

Weeks 5 to 8: with a backpack

Pack half the weight, and increase your weekend walk to 15 kilometres. Look for hills, because walking downhill is especially good training for your knees and thighs.

Weeks 9 to 11: two days

Walk around 15 to 20 kilometres on each of two consecutive days with a full backpack. Now you will see where it rubs, and that is exactly the point.

Week 12: rest

The last week is just easy walking. Let your feet rest, and sort out your documents and packing list.

If you are over 60, you will find advice under Pilgrimage in later life. The list for the trip is on our gear page.
